Nobody ever gave that speech

The most quoted graduation advice of my generation was a newspaper column.

Many years ago, someone dear to me introduced me to a song. Seven minutes of a calm voice telling a graduating class how their lives are going to go. “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)”. If you’re roughly my age you already know it. If you’re not, look for Baz Luhrmann’s Class of 1999 Free to Wear Sunscreen.

I go anyway, do it my own way, and write down what happened, the cost as well as the win.

  • Something I actually went and did. What I tried, how it went, and the parts I got wrong.
  • The evidence where evidence exists. Taken seriously, including the times it says the conventional advice was right. Issue one checked the one line the song’s author staked her credibility on. It held.
  • No prescription. It’s yours to find out, not mine to rule on.
